Blown and engraved glass
Applying two dimensional imagery to three dimensional objects allows me to explore the perception and reception of an image on the eye and mind of the viewer. We do not see in two dimensions, yet we draw and communicate through them. Merging a manual and digital drawing practice through cold working on a three dimensional object allows me to start exploring images to create a new perceptual space.
Personal Work; Free Blown and engraved glass
Collaboration; Garry Nash x Claire Bell 2013-2016
The Flora Series combines a core idea from Garry Nash of reinventing art nouveau floral imagery for the 21st century on his blown glass vessels. I was asked to experiment with using stencils similar to street art and graffiti to approach this concept. My graphic imagery of native New Zealand flora was the result. Four exhibitions resulted, 'Sprout', as guests of Medallion Art New Zealand at the indoor show of Sculpture in the Gardens 2013/4, 'Sprout 2' at Remuera Gallery and 'Cultivate' at Form Gallery (both 2014). 'Flower Garden', a group show (Form Gallery, 2015) followed, featuring the four picture plates shown below. Renditions of more common garden flowers, such a poppy, hydrangea, tiger lily and a modern strawberry thief design were also produced throughout this series.
